Fall Gardening is a special joy

Fall gardens can be a joy. They can also supplement your diet with good fresh produce. Yes it takes work to keep your garden producing. The rewards are many.

Right now I have hundreds of seedings coming up. They are turnips, spinach, kale, choy, cabbage, arugula, lettuces, mustard greens, radishes, kohlrabi and beets. Soon I will plant a hundred or so onion sets.

Unless the temp drops below 25 degrees, and stays there I will have food stuffs all winter into Spring. I have gone out and kicked ice and snow off my mustard greens and by the afternoon they are right back to standing tall. Turnips and other greens actually taste better after a freeze. They produce antifreeze which sweetens the taste.

Let’s face it, we all need to eat better. Many of which I plant, you can buy in grocery stores and that is good. I also know many of you cannot have a garden for many reasons. But if you have a sunny place you can be growing eatable plants.

I plant many of what I mentioned in my Spring garden. This year my pepper plants have been amazing. Just today I picked several large tomatoes.  During the dog days of summer most of my other plants are done. It is during those hot days I am dreaming of my fall garden.
